The QuizMaster

Revision & Resource Package

2019 - (Ongoing)

Background & Market Discussion:

There is a wealth of high quality GCSE maths resources available on the web.

Sites, such as DrFrost.org, Mathswatch.co.uk and SparxMaths.com (Formerly HegartyMaths) are all established maths revision providers, but each have their own benefits and drawbacks:

The QuizMaster Package is able to create previously genuine exam questions as seen on Mathswatch, coupled with the personalisation of Sparx, and the resource flexibility of Dr Frost.

What is QuizMaster?

The QuizMaster package is a paper-based maths resource generator. At its core, the program takes existing GCSE maths questions direct from exam past papers, converts them into code, attaches to a random number generator and name generator, such that the values in the questions will change without changing the core of the question:

These ‘shadow’ questions therefore enable students to practise certain question types in detail, without having to do so with the same values each time.

Original Question from Edexcel, and 2 examples where the values have been changed.

For most questions, there is the ‘exam’ version, and a scaffolded ‘bronze’ question. This means that if learners are not confident with the problem-solving questions, they can break the question down into steps (a/b/c/d), enabling the learner to focus on the maths, rather than the AO3 (“problem solving”) questions, until they are confident enough to try the original question:

Process for scaffolding AO3/ Problem solving questions.

In Class Starter Templates

There are multiple templates which can be used for ‘starter’ activities within a taught lesson. These templates take random questions from the internal question bank.

Lecturers can choose between 1 – 2 mark questions, AO3 (‘problem solving’) only, and there is an ‘image friendly’ template for scaffolded or extended answer questions

Answer keys are automatically generated and saved along with the question sheet.

These can be generated, saved and printed at the click of a button, saving teaching staff valuable time when planning activities.

Topic Worksheets

QM Worksheet UI and Example

Quizmaster is capable of creating topic based booklets for lessons with an easy to use interface.

Topics can be searched for using the Edexcel specification references, edited or removed, and even duplicated (for ‘shadow questions’), to tailor the worksheet to the class’ needs.

each booklet also provided a full set of worked solutions, so students can check answers as they go and self mark / correct.

Questions are sorted by difficulty, to help with students’ confidence and flow of the lesson.

Graded Revision Guides

As a result of Quizmaster's popularity, the department requested a template to create revision guides which can be tailored to suit students’ needs on a class level.

This template is capable of creating a revision booklet (to be taken home), where the teacher can set the difficulty, length and level of ‘problem solving’ for a class set.

Step by step answers are also made available in a separate booklet.

Personalisation & Individualisation

QuizMaster also worked alongside a separate ‘QLA’ (Question Level Analysis) Program, whereby students could enter their exam scores (from past papers, in class assessments, etc.), and have QuizMaster generate an individualised revision guide with worked solutions to any questions they got wrong, and supplementary shadow questions for the learner to practise.

This package was used not just within the maths department, but also in the Engineering Department, with several other STEM based subject areas expressing interest on top:

67% of Level 3 Engineering Students made Positive Progress from their baseline assessment,

63% of students progressed enough to effect a grade change (Fail to Pass, Pass to Merit, Merit to Distinction)

Testimonial from the senior lecturer from the Engineering department.

What’s Next for Quizmaster

Whilst this program was used on an institutional level, the next natural step for QuizMaster is to convert the suite from an Office based program, into a Web App, where students can log in, upload their results, and create their own personalised revision resources.

Whilst sites such as PinPoint provide this service to some extent, QuizMaster’s paper resources have been reported to be more user friendly, and despite being a paper-based resource, there is enough online support provided via other platforms, such that the student can monitor their own progress without the need for a teacher.

This is an ongoing project which has the scope for further development and monetisation for interested parties.
